Chapter1 General Rules
Name
Clause 1. The society is named the Japan Esophageal Society (JES), hereafter referred to as the Society.
Secretariat
Clause 2. The Secretariat of the Society is located at Sun-city Inohana B, Inohana 3-2-4, Chuo-ku, Chiba-city, Chiba Prefecture.
Chapter2 Aims and Activities
Aims
Clause 3. The Society has taken over the activities and duties of the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases. Its major aims are the promotion and development of basic and clinical research on esophageal diseases, thereby contributing to public health and welfare in Japan.
To accomplish the aims described in Clause 3, the Society performs the following activities:
- Holds scientific meetings;
- Publishes medical journals;
- Contacts and cooperates with related scientific committees in Japan and abroad;
- Performs other activities required to accomplish the aims of the Society.

Chapter3 Society Rules
Types of Members
Clause 5. The Society shall be comprised of the following types of members:
- Regular members: Persons who agree with the aims of the Society and are admitted to the Society
- Honorary chairmen: Former chairmen of the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases.
- Honorary members: Persons who are recommended by the Chairman after deliberation by the Board of Directors and Board of Councilors, selected from among the current Caretakers of the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases, the former Chairmen of the Society, and long-term Directors of the Society.
- Special members: Persons who are recommended by the Chairman after deliberation by the Board of Directors and Board of Councilors, selected from among long-term Organizers or Caretakers of the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases, long-term Councilors of the Society, and individuals who have made substantial contributions to the Society.
- Supporting members: Individuals, corporations, or organizations recommended by the Board of Directors and approved by the Board of Councilors who/that agree with the aims of the Society and want to help to develop the Society.
Admission
Clause 6. Persons wishing to join the Society have to apply for membership to the Secretariat according to specified procedures and have to be approved by the Board of Directors.
Admission fee and membership fee
Clause 7. Members are to pay an admission fee and membership fee according to the rules established at the General Meeting. Honorary chairmen, honorary members, and special members do not have to pay the membership fee.
Loss of membership
Clause 8. Members will lose their membership qualifications for any of the following reasons:
- Cancellation of membership;
- Death;
- Expulsion from membership.
Cancellation of membership
Clause 9. Members wishing to cancel their membership must submit to the Chairman a written request stating the reason for withdrawal from the Society.
Expulsion from membership
Clause 10. Members may be expelled from membership by the Chairman after deliberation by the Board of Directors in the event of any of the following circumstances. However, such members shall be granted an opportunity to explain the situation to the Board of Directors.
- The execution of actions that negatively affect the honor of the Society or go against the aims of the Society;
- Breaching duties of the membership;
- Not paying the membership fee for 2 or more years. However, membership can be reinstated if the membership fee is paid retroactively.
No refund of membership fee
Clause 11. Membership fees, admission fees, other contributions that have been paid are not refundable.
